Jim Talent: I'm not running for Senate

I  noted this in my last post, but former Sen. Jim Talent says he is definitely not going to be a replacement candidate for Congressman Todd Akin, if Akin drops out of the race:

“No, I’m not running for the Senate,” Talent told reporters attending the Republican platform committee in Tampa, where he serves as a delegate from Missouri. Talent held McCaskill’s seat before she defeated him in 2006. He said he had been holed up in meetings discussing the Republican platform and had received 15 phone messages about the Akin situation. But he said he not spoken to Akin. He said that Sen. John Cornyn’s call for Akin to consider leaving the race “very appropriate.”

The GOP is going to need someone with at least some talent if it hopes to unseat McCaskill in November given the growing backlash against the party over its narrow ideological position on so many of the issues.
