McCaskill campaign launches Akin truth website

(From the Claire McCaskill campaign)

Yesterday, Missouri’s most conservative voters narrowly elected Todd Akin to be the standard bearer for an extreme party funded by Washington special interests who already spent more than $8 million to silence Claire McCaskill with lies and distortions. While Akin may try to spend the next three months running from his extreme positions, TruthAboutAkin.com will allow Missourians to learn where Akin really stands on key issues that are important to Missouri’s families.

“What voters want right now is for candidates to be honest about where they stand, so we’re letting Todd Akin speak for himself,” said Erik Dorey, McCaskill for Missouri spokesman. “Whether it’s privatizing Medicare and Social Security, ending federal student loans, or balancing the budget on the backs of working families while protecting Big Oil and mega-millionaires, Todd Akin has consistently shown that he has turned his back on Missouri’s working families, opting instead to stand with Washington special interests. Try as he might to convince Missourians otherwise, the tape just doesn’t lie.”

This site, which launched today, allows voters to check the facts about Akin and hear firsthand his extreme positions--privatizing Medicare and Social Security, ending federal student loans and protecting tax giveaways for Big Oil and mega-millionaires--that would hurt Missouri’s working families. Throughout the campaign, the site will continue to be updated to show Missourians the truth about Akin’s real priorities.

Today, the election becomes a choice between Claire, a Senator who for six years has worked across the aisle as a moderate fighting for Missouri families, and Akin, who has spent this entire primary pandering to the special interests who have attacked Claire with secret money ads because they know she will stand up to them.

For well over a year, more than $16 million in attack ads -- $8 million coming from anonymously funded special interest groups based in Washington, DC -- have distorted Claire’s record to prop up the eventual winner of the brutal Republican Senate primary.
